Seasonal Signals Observed in Non-Contact Long-Term Road Texture Measurements

Texture is required on road pavements for safe vehicle braking and manoeuvres. This paper provides a unique analysis of long-term texture obtained using traffic speed condition survey (TRACS) data from 14 sites, located along north to south transect spanning the longest highway in UK. A total 19 years sensor measured depth (SMTD) have been analyzed spatial filtering techniques compared with meteorological datasets. The results hot rolled asphalt (HRA) surfaces reveal that changes SMTD follow linearly increasing trend time. “rate change” influenced by order magnitude annual average daily (AADT), when factored percentage heavy goods vehicles. linear disrupted environmental parameters, such as rainfall events seasonal conditioning. In summer, this signal evident transient peak greater than 0.04 mm, winter reduction. corresponded above occurring week prior measurement. observed demonstrates an inverse pattern classically understood variation skid resistance UK, where values are low summer high winter. findings demonstrate first time measurements experience signal, provide compelling evidence pointing toward surface processes (such polishing wetting drying contaminants) causing affecting resistance.
